Foods Masquerading as Healthy🎭

Marketing has been lying to us.

If you enjoy our blog, chances are you’re concerned about your health or trying to reach health goals. Today I’m going to be sharing a few foods commonly marketed as healthy, that are in fact packed with yucky ingredients.

Let’s jump right in:

🎭To Keep or Not To Keep? Granola Bars (or any kind of packaged bars) Granola bars are marketed as healthy alternatives to chips and snacks…some even claim to be equal to a protein shake or replace meals! The truth is they’re often packed with sugar (or artificial sweeteners) that are far from healthy. A good option if you can’t do without the convenience of bars is to make your own with clean ingredients! There are some super easy recipes online & you get to choose exactly what you put in them. Flavored Yogurts (or shelf-stable yogurt) Yogurt is a dairy product…and nobody can convince me that yogurt will stay fresh unrefrigerated for days on end without preservatives. If the yogurt doesn’t say “keep refrigerated”, I’m not touching it. That’s rule number one. Secondly, we’ve all been marketed the idea that yogurt is a healthy option for breakfast & snacks. They’re not wrong! A good Greek yogurt is certainly healthy. But have you ever checked the ingredients on those sweetened, flavored yogurts? Disgusting. That’s all I have to say. Cereal & Granola There’s absolutely nothing wrong with oats or bran, but I have a problem with products being marketed as healthy, especially targeting kids, that are actually packed with sugar, artificial flavours, colours & preservatives. There’s no way that could possibly be healthy. Do you have granola in your cupboard? Go check it right now and see how many added sugars are hidden in there! Definitely not a great way to start off the day for your blood sugar… Instead I either make my own homemade granola or have old fashioned oats with coconut cream & dark chocolate. Salad Dressings & Vinaigrettes There, you’ve made the choice to opt for a nutritious salad. Great! until you reach for that dressing…Most store bought dressings, even the savory ones, have hidden added sugars. Take a look at that ingredients list! Oh and while we’re on the topic of dressing and sauces, take a look at your Ketchup, mustard, mayo & tartar sauce and see if they have hidden sugars lurking! Instead, look for super easy dressing recipes that you can make in batches at home so you know exactly what you’re consuming.

You’d be surprised what a difference these small swaps can make!
