We're already in the second month of 2024 as I write this!
When you read thatâ, do you feel:
â ď¸empowered and on-track to reach your goals?
âOr shame, defeat & self loathing?
No matter when you're reading this, take a moment to reflect on where you're at with your health goals.
So many people set health goals for the new year that look like thisđ.
This year I will exercise every day.
I will eat healthy.
I will get to sleep on time.
Iâll drink more water.
âThen by the end of the first week youâre feeling like a failure because you missed your workout yesterday, scrolled social âtil 2am and today you had soda because the water fountain was out of order.
Now what?
Well, I used to be the sameâŚuntil I discovered these principles Iâm about to share with you.
Hereâs my philosophy on health goals
Break It Down.
Yeah, I know thatâs way too simple. So letâs explore what I mean & how that looks in real life.
3 Key Questions to ask yourself when setting health goals:
How often have I been practicing this habit in the past 3 months?
What am I currently doing in the time Iâd need to implement this new habit?
Whatâs my plan for the days where I just canât?
For Example:
đIf you want to exercise consistently:
First ask yourself, how often have I been exercising in the past 3 months?
âIf the answer to that is less than twice a week consistently, thereâs no freaking way itâs realistic to expect that youâll work out every day overnight.
â ď¸Start with 3 times a week.
Next, ask yourself, what am I currently doing in the time Iâd need to exercise 3 days a week?
âIf the answer is scrolling social media,
â ď¸Install an app blocker and make it impossible to get caught in a scroll on afternoons between 5 & 6pm!
Finally, Whatâs my plan for the days where I just canât?
âWe all know life happens. You get sick, you stay late at work, your period throws a curveball & youâre bleeding like Niagara Falls [thatâs not normal by the way!]
â ď¸Instead of marinating in guilt & allowing that feeling of âwell, Iâve blown it already so I might as well never exercise againâ [see how silly that sounds out loud?!?], give yourself the grace to honour your body & itâs immediate needs. Take an extra rest day this week. That doesnât mean you canât do 3 workouts next week!
