Usually in my Inner Spring I feel creative, motivated & energetic. ź¤
š„±At the moment, Iām feeling like Iād much rather to back to bed. Anyway, Iāll write this newsletter & then check my habits to see which ones Iāve been skipping. I probably need to stop eating past 6pm so I can sleep properly to begin with lol.
Enough about me! Letās talk about different types of stress & the impact on hormones & PCOS!
Deep Dive on Types of Stress
As you read through the following, count how many of these you experience on a daily basis.
šAcute Stress: This type of stress is short-term and often triggered by specific events or situations. It's the body's immediate reaction to a perceived threat or pressure.
šChronic Stress: This is long-term stress that persists over an extended period. It can result from ongoing issues like financial problems, relationship difficulties, or work-related stress.
šPhysical Stress: This stress stems from physical factors such as illness, injury, intense exercise, lack of sleep, or nutritional deficiencies.
šEmotional Stress: Emotional stress arises from situations that impact your emotions, like the loss of a loved one, relationship issues, or dealing with major life changes.
šEnvironmental Stress: This type of stress is caused by external factors like noise, pollution, crowding, or weather conditions.
šPsychological Stress: Psychological stress relates to mental and emotional strains, including pressure from demands, uncertainty, or fear of the future, or just freaking stress about being stressed [Stop that right now. Simply choose not to engage in stressing about stress & stop saying āIām stressedā as though stress defines you. Change that to āI am feeling stressed right nowā instead]!
Understanding these categories can help in identifying and managing stress effectively.
šIf youāre experiencing more than one of these daily, your body needs extra nutrients to cope.
šIf youāre experiencing more than 3 of these on a daily basis, it's time to reach out for help.
So how does STRESS affect PCOS?
šStress can significantly impact PCOS, worsening the symptoms. Elevated stress levels contribute to hormonal imbalances, particularly increased production of cortisolāa stress hormoneāwhich can disrupt the delicate balance of reproductive hormones involved in PCOS.
šIn fact, I am of the opinion that elevated cortisol over time may be the trigger of PCOS development to begin with!
This disruption often intensifies symptoms like irregular periods, exacerbates acne and hair growth, and can even interfere with ovulation, thereby affecting fertility.
Moreover, stress-induced changes in lifestyle behaviors, such as poor diet choices and irregular sleep patterns, can further aggravate PCOS symptoms, creating a cycle that can be challenging to break without professional guidance.
šAdditionally, chronic stress can worsen underlying insulin resistance, a common feature of PCOS.
How?Ā
Heightened stress levels can lead to increased insulin resistance, making it more difficult for the body to regulate blood sugar levels. This can result in weight gain, exacerbating one of the primary concerns for many with PCOS.
šŖØThe intertwining relationship between stress and PCOS underlines the importance of stress management techniques in the comprehensive approach to managing this condition.
Efforts to reduce stress through mindfulness, relaxation techniques, adequate sleep, and regular physical activity can significantly alleviate the impact of stress on PCOS symptoms and overall well-being.
š±But stress is complex, & most people need help to learn to manage their stress. Someone to hold your hand and guide you towards your goals!
